What was the best 1980's reproduction movie of 2009?
Total Votes: 2
Not sure if anyone else noticed, but there were at least five movies released this year that had ties to a production originally aired in the 1980's - Terminator Salvation, Transformers 2, Land of the Lost, G.I. Joe, and Friday the 13th. However, only Transformers 2 cracked the top 10 (#1 grossing in US).
Being a child of the '80's, I was very much anticipating seeing each of these movies in theatres. However, being an adult in the new age recession, my focus was elsewhere. Of these five films, I have only seen Transformers 2 (bought the DVD). However, I plan on ordering each of the others on-demand when they are released.
Terminator Salvation lacked Arnold, but still tried to lure in the fans from the 1984 hit. Transformers 2 was still playing off the emotion created from the first release back in 2007, but was also still trying to tap into the fans from the 1980 cartoon series. I presume that the producers of G.I. Joe saw just how profitable Transformers was (as well as their intention on creating a trilogy), that they tried to capitalize on the same target audience. If memory serves, cartoon episodes of G.I. Joe and Transformers aired back-to-back in the 1980's. The only movie that came out of left field here was Land of the Lost. I recall watching the show as a young child, gazing in wonderment at the special effects and the dinosaurs. Then, a cable channel decided to re-air those episodes in a marathon preluding up to the theatrical release of the film. Boy, was I dumb-founded to see how poor each component of the show really was. I could bare to watch only a few minutes of one episode. The acting was awful, the special effects were stupid, and the storyline was shaky at best. I found myself laughing at myself for claiming to be such a fan of the show. But then again, special effects and storylines have come along way since the early 1980's.
I have not heard rave reviews for the other films, but I did not hear that they were awful either. Just curious to see if anyone has seen all of them, and which one do you think was the best?
Additionally, I read that there is another movie in the making relating to a 1980 TV show - The A-Team. However, that has been under production for quite some time, and the release continues to be pushed back (as of now, the release date is sometime in 2010).
Furthermore, these reproductions have lead me to believe that there is no more imagination and creativity left in Hollywood. Filmmakers are looking to get rich off an aged idea, hoping to get us gen Xers to think that we are young again. Don't be surprised to see a remake of E.T. or Short Circuit sometime in the near future.
Good article. I was discussing this with a friend the other day. A majority of the "Big Budget" movies these days are retreads of movies or hit T.V shows that aired in the past. in the last 3 years we have had Star Trek, Pelham, Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Diary of the Dead, Die Hard 4 or was it 5 etc etc. And that does not count all of the Japanese Horror movies that were adapted for the US audience in the last 7 years. The last big budget movie that was somewhat original grated it was based off of a book was the Lord of the Ring Triology and after writing that sentence I have to take it back because it was based off of the book. Who will be the Speilberg of the tween generation? I had hope for M Night Shamalyan but then there was the "Lady in the Water" debacle. Sigh. That is why I seek out foreign films such as "Pans Labrynth or Lat Den Ratte Komma In" in order to get my movie fix these days.

I think one has to consider the fact that SO MANY MORE movies are made now than then. I found one stat that quoted five hundred more movies in 2007 than in 1997. While completely unscientific, I'm sure we all have noticed this at least casually. More movies+the same amount of originality= well...
also, consider that the top grossing films in 1989: four of them were sequels, one of the "original" movies was Batman (not a sequel, but hardly an original concept), another was The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen classic)
The original Pelham, 1,2,3, was so much better {Walter Matthau rules!!!] than the remake. Footloose is going to be remade in 2010..as is the Karate Kid....Footloose was bad the first time around. Remakes arent usually better...Batmanw/Heath Ledger was very bleak, and dark...The one from 1989 was at least easier for me to watch...It had its funny moments..I dont care how many more movies they make now, the originality is going right out the window...The day after tomorrow, and Independence Day are enough, do we really need 2012???? They tried w/Dirty Dancing, havana nights....it was bad...I'll be okay w/remakes, good or bad, as long as nobody remakes Gonew/the Wind, [Scarlett was a sequel, and on tv] All about Eve, Grapes of Wrath, [Of mice and Men was already remade, that was horrible.]...On the waterfront, It happened one night, Days and Wine and Roses, Streetcar was a play on B'dway....Grumpy old Men, A Tree grows in Brooklyn [was remade for tv in the 70's], it was ok....Father of the Bride was remade-it was ok, too...Cheaper by the dozen, the remske had to be tweaked to show "a realistic marraige in current time" but the original was so much better....Cat on Hot Tin Roof, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Nobodys Fool...to name a few...A few good Men, As good as it Gets, Terms of Endearment, The Apartment, Bad News Bears was remade also, [the original was better]!!! Swing Blade,Thelma and louise, Dead Man Walking, The Princess Bride, and When Harry met Sally...
Some like it hot, Dont bother to knock, Gentlemens Agreement, To kill a Mockingbird, The Hunt for Red October, Beetlejuice, Both Godfathers, Goodfellas, Coal Miners Daughter, Steel Magnolias, Arthur, Pretty Woman, Primal Fear, Fight Club, Generation X, Seven, Krooklyn, Jungle Fever, Do the right thing, A Bronx Tale, 29th Street, Elf, Old School, The misfits, The Seven Year Itch, Friday Night Lights, Sam I Am, Mystic River, Anchorman, We are Marshall, Analyze This, Saturday Night Fever, Michael, Wild Hogs, Out Of Sight, Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction, and Pacific Heights...to name a few..
